Radio Polarization and Flux Density Variability of BL Lacertae: Oblique Shocks

چکیده

The results of more than 20 years of UMRAO multifre-quency single antenna observations of BL Lac reveal a series of polarized outbursts. Comparison of these results with VLBI maps shows that for many bursts the electric vector of the polarized emission (EVPA) is parallel to the observed jet structure, and several of these bursts have been quantitatively modeled by weak, transverse shocks propagating along a relativistic ow. However, in the past decade the EVPA has exhibited variations of tens of degrees from burst to burst which cannot be accounted for by transverse shocks. During this same period VLBI observations by Mutel, Denn and others have shown curvature and orientation changes in the radio jet structures. This behavior suggests the presence of oblique shocks. The required strength of the shocks, and the range of angles which specify the orientation of the shock fronts which are required to account for these variations in EVPA (and still reproduce the observed degree of polarization) are discussed. We nd that oblique shocks with strengths comparable to the transverse shocks, already used in our mod-eling, appear capable of producing the observed polarization behavior.

Polarization and Variations of BL Lacertae Objects

BL Lacertae objects are an extreme subclass of AGNs showing rapid and large-amplitude variability, high and variable polarization, and core-dominated radio emissions. If a strong beaming effect is the cause of the extreme observation properties, one would expect that these properties would be correlated with each other. Based on the relativistic beaming model, relationships between the polariza...

Cm-wavelength Total Flux and Linear Polarization Properties of Radio-loud Bl Lacertae Objects

We present results from a long-term program to quantify the range of behavior of the cm-wavelength total flux and linear polarization variability properties of a sample of 41 radio-loud BL Lac objects using weekly to tri-monthly observations with the University of Michigan 26-meter telescope operating at 14.5, 8.0, and 4.8 GHz; these observations are used to identify class-dependent differences...

Optical Polarization of 52 Radio-Loud QSOs and BL Lac Objects

Polarization measurements are presented for 52 radio-loud QSOs and BL Lac objects. For 9 highly polarized (p> 3%) AGN, these are the first published polarization measurements. Of these 9, 7 are highly-polarized QSOs (HPQs), one is a BL Lac object and another is a likely BL Lac object. Polarization variability is confirmed for some of these new and previously known highly-polarized AGN. While 6 ...

Evidence for Polarized Synchrotron Components in Radio-optical Aligned Quasars

A tendency for the axes of double-lobed radio quasars to be aligned with the electric vectors of optical polarization in the active galactic nuclei is well-known. However, the origin of the polarization and reason behind its correlation with radio morphology is not yet established. From accurate spectropolarimetry of 7 quasars which show this alignment effect, we find that the polarization is u...

Structure and flux variability in the VLBI jet of BL Lacertae during the WEBT ⋆ campaigns ( 1995 – 2004 )

BL Lacertae has been the target of several observing campaigns by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) collaboration and is one of the best studied blazars at all accessible wavelengths. A recent analysis of the optical and radio variability indicates that part of the radio variability is correlated with the optical light curve. Here we present an analysis of a huge VLBI data set including 1...
